DULUTH, Minn.-Annette Wiles, who has pocketed 300 wins in 15 years and ranks 17th in winning percentage among active NCAA, Division II women’s basketball coaches, has accepted the position of head women’s basketball coach of Minnesota-Duluth it was announced recently.

The UMD athletic department announced that Wiles, who just finished her eighth season behind the bench of the Fort Hayes State University women’s basketball program and whom also served as an assistant athletic director, will assume her responsibilities on May 19.

“We feel very fortunate to have attracted one of the nation’s top basketball coaches in Annette Wiles,” said UMD athletic director Bob Nielson. “Throughout her career she has proven herself as a “winner” with the ability to build and maintain a nationally competitive program. Her leadership and commitment is exactly what our program needs.”

Wiles compiled an outstanding overall record of 300-141 for a .680 winning percentage, including eight years courtside for the Tigers. She led FHSU to its first national tournament appearance during the 2004-05 season with a team record of 22-8. The Tigers had five Academic All-MIAA members this past season, as well as two All-MIAA selections and an Academic All-American, the third such All-American Wiles had at FHSU during her tenure.

Prior to taking over at her alma mater, the native of Hunter, Kansas, racked up a winning percentage of .770 (164-49) in seven years as the head coach at NAIA Bethany College, in Linsborg, Kan. She led the Swedes into the national tournament four times while showcasing seven consecutive 20+ win seasons. Wiles had 25 Academic All-Americans in just seven years at Bethany.

The two-time All-American, who helped lead the Tigers to the 1991 NAIA national championship, played four seasons at FHSU from 1987-91 and ended her career as the top scorer and rebounder in the history of the women’s program with 2,407 points and 961 rebounds. The career records still stand today.

Wiles is a member of both the Tiger Sports and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 as an individual. She became a member of just the second class to ever be inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2003. The 1990-91 FHSU National Championship team she played for was inducted into the Tiger Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

“I’m absolutely excited to be a Bulldog,” said Wiles. “I am well aware of the excellent basketball played in Minnesota and the surrounding region, and I look forward to building a tremendous program with established tradition.”

Wiles received a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Fort Hays State University in 1991, and earned a Masters of Science in Physical Education with an emphasis on Athletic Administration in 1993 from FHSU.
