| Washburn Opens 2006 With Record-Setting Win 01-01-2006 |
TOPEKA, Kansas - The Washburn Blues ushered in 2006 by establishing a number of school records in a 109-28 win over Missouri Valley Sunday, January 1, setting a new high-water mark for the largest win in school history with the 81-point victory. The win for Washburn was its 50th straight non-conference win and its 32nd straight overall, as well as its 29th straight in Lee Arena. The Vikings led 2-0 scoring the first points of the game, and after trading baskets the score was tied at four all. Then Washburn exploded on a 27 to 5 run opening up a 31-9 lead while finishing the first half on a 25-0 run over the final 8:26 of the first half taking a 56-11 lead into halftime. The Blues shot 57 percent in the first half hitting 24 of 42 shots while holding the Vikings to 5 of 16 shooting for a 31 percent clip. In the second half, the Lady Blues marched on a 26 to 3 run over the first 8:55 of the half rolling to the win. Megan Sullivan led seven Blues in double figures with 16 points. Brooke Ubelaker, Amanda Holmes, Jessica Aebi and Jessica Mainz each scored 13 while Homes recorded her first Washburn double double with 10 boards and Mainz set a new career-high with her 13 points. Bojana Samardziska scored 12 and Jennifer Harris scored 10. Theresa Gittens had nine to lead Missouri Valley. The 109 points for Washburn is their highest total this season. The Blues also set records for the largest margin of victory (81); most assists with 34 breaking previous record of 32. Washburn forced the Vikings into 36 turnovers on 30 steals, which is also a new school record.
